So why hemp? The Huffington Post goes on to explain in an article all the amazing benefits of supporting the hemp movement. Hemp is an incredible crop that can replace some major products that are used every day such as cotton, paper, concrete, bio-fuel, and plastic! Hemp is a power crop that requires less space to grow and fewer resources than most other crops harvested here in the US.

 

The hemp plant is a great natural resource for cleaning soil of carbon dioxide. Huffington Post writes, "Hemp actually absorbs CO2 while it grows through natural photosynthesis, making it carbon-negative from the get-go." The hemp plant was actually used after the Chernobyl accident to regenerate the soil and groundwater that was contaminated.

 

Hemp is a very resilient plant and resistant to most of common pests that take over other crops. For this reason, hemp can be more naturally grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and thriving on less water than most crops.

 

Another factor to take into consideration is what the hemp has been dipped in. 2Rivers hempwick is dipped in beeswax. Beeswax is far superior to any man-made wax that is utilized today.

 

Most of the public has no idea of the harmful chemicals that are found in most household wax candles. Paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum refining, is a highly toxic (and environmentally unfriendly) product that literally poisons the air you breathe. Paraffin wax starts as the sludge at the bottom of the barrel of crude oil. Even asphalt is extracted before paraffin in the refining process! The black sludge, already filled with numerous toxins, undergoes bleaching and treatment by carcinogens benzene and/or toluene.

 

Beeswax, on the other hand, actually cleans the air when it burns. How is this possible?

Beeswax releases negative ions when it burns. Pollen, dust, dirt, pollutants, and any other junk in the air all carry a positive charge, and that is how they can be suspended in the air. The negative ions released from burning beeswax negate the positive charge of air contaminants, and the neutralized ions are sucked back into the wick or fall to the ground. Beeswax candles effectively reduce asthma, allergies, and hay fever by drawing pollutants out of the air.
